Did Stormzy Invent This?

Did Stormzy Invent This?

Stormzy told Louis Theroux he thinks he invented the high-knee dance... 🤔

Just thought I'd take the opportunity to highlight that this dance has been around for decades and stems from Jamaican dancehall culture 🇯🇲

Check out Ninjaman and Supercat casually breaking into the dance during performances in 1991. (Stormzy was born in 1990.)

There are certainly dozens more dancehall artists that have also done it over the years 🎵

Jamaican influence has permeated pop culture so deeply that it's understandable not everyone partaking in it will know the root of the very thing they're enjoying, or in this case, performing 🕺🏾

Grime pulled a lot from JA, from the clashes, to the wheel-ups, to the style of emceeing, etc. Hip-Hop is very much a fruit of Jamaican influence too, pulling from sound system culture and the practice of dubbing. DJ Kool Herc aka the Father of Hip Hop, invented the process of looping the lit parts of a song which gave birth to sampling and set the stage for rap to come through. Herc is Jamaican 🎧

Likkle bit of history for your headtop 🥸

Nines' infamous mascot Crop Cat is quite obviously based on the cartoon character Top Cat 😸
